NAGINIMORA:
It is situated at a distance of 58 km from Mon via
Wakching, Naginimora, formerly known as Lakhan, is a subdivision in Mon
district and is sited in Kongan village land. It is also a beautiful
small town in the district presenting wide panoramic views. The only
coalfield in Nagaland founded by the East India Company in 1907 is at
Borjan near Naginimora where a reserve of 6.5 million tonnes of coal has
been proved so far.
According the legend a Konyak Naga Queen, Watlong
Konyak, married to an Ahom King and died at Lakhan. As such, the king
renamed Lakhan as Naginimora to honor his dead wife. The word ‘Nagini’
Meaning Naga queen and ‘Mora’ meaning death, the death place of the Naga
Queen.
LONGWA VILLAGE:
Longwa is one of the biggest villages in Mon
district. It is an interesting sight to see. As the village straddles
international boundary line (Myanmar), as one half of the Anghs house
falls within the Indian Territory, whereas the other half lies under
Myanmeres control. However, the whole village is controlled by the Angh
(Chief), there is a chief Angh and seven Angh’s in a village and the
village Council Chairman. Another interesting feature of this village is
that the Angh of the village has 60 wives and his jurisdiction extends
up to Myanmar and Arunachal Pradesh. There are four rivers running from
the village, two rivers run into the Indian side called Tegi and Tapi
and the other two to Myanmar called Tejak and Shumnyu. The villahers
have dual citizenships. You’ll be surprised to see both the Indian an
and Myanmeres school in this village. The department of Tourism has
constructed a three room tourist cottage which is run by the Church
authorities.
SHANGNYU VILLAGE:
Ruled by the chief Angh, Shangnyu village is one of
the prominent villages in Mon district. The huge and unique piece of
wood-arving at the entrance of the Angh's house, which is believed to be
constructed by two brothers with the help of the spirit, appears to be
made during the metallic Age which measures approximately 189 feet in
length and breadth, 14 feet hight-is now properly presereved in a
concreat museum right infront of the Ang’s house. Now it is 500-600
years old. The memorial stone are also found in front of the Angh's
palace. History records that good and friendly relationship existed
between Shangnyu and Ahom kings. Shangnyu Angh used to collect taxes
from all the villages under his domain ranging from Sibsagar in Assam to
the Wanchos in Arunachal Pradesh.
VEDA PEAK (PAK KOI):
Veda peak, the highest peak in Mon district is
approximately 70 km east of Mon district headquarters. From the top of
this peak one can have a clear view of both river Brahmaputra and
Chindwin (Burma) on a clear day. There is also a waterfall on the
precincts of this peak and this area is also considered as one of the
best locations in the whole of Konyak countryside. Veda peak was the
place where the British soldiers first erected their camp, it was the
place where the British planted the first opium plant in the land of
Konyak Naga.
CHENLOISHO VILLAGE:
Chenloisho village is also the biggest village in
Chen area, which is situated near the boundary of India and Myanmar.
There is a small museum keeping all kinds of traditional ornaments. The
skull of human head during the period of head hunting were displayed in
a place called Waloo, and above the village there is a place which has
the immemorial footprints of two ladies named Chenthron and Manya. |
